300-year-old rare document on Moroccan army revealed
Rabat, Sep. 19 - The existence of a rare and unpublished deed documenting the early establishment of the Moroccan army 300 years ago was revealed.

Historian and member of the Kingdom of Morocco Academy, Abdelhadi Tazi who was the first to reveal the 6-meter-long document said the latter brings a unique perspective about the Moroccan army under the reign of Moulay Esmail (1672 to 1727), and also documents the ending of the slavery status of some 221,320 people who settled among many tribes in Morocco.

Professor Tazi noted that this deed is well written and bears the signature of some 70 major leaders of Morocco’s different regions.

He described it as "a mother-of-all-books, due to its size, and its historical, geographical and cultural value." "It could have been written by Mohamed Belayyachi, a prominent Cadi (judge) under Moulay Esmail’s reign," he added.

"This document gives us valuable insight into the very beginnings of the Moroccan army, which was in charge of defending the country’s maritime fronts and unity,” underlined the Moroccan historian.

The document was enclosed in a book professor Tazi wrote marking the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Moroccan Armed Forces, and which was presented to king Mohammed VI during this year’s first Ramadan religious lectures.

To me it raises many questions, eg. where was this document held and where is it now?
The number given of slaves looks very much for that period. It seems that the author is anonime
Was it realy first moroccan army?
Has anybody read this book or knows more about it?
My interest is if the contact with the ayt atta is mentioned and many others..

The colapse of Moroccan empire who used to secure Andalucia borders was due to the spread of barbarian Bannu Hillal tribes. Merinids tried to maintain the empire and defend Andalucia but failed due the impossibility of submitting those tribes and allies to pay taxes and enroll in army. Their spread in Morocco mainland triggerred the long lasting decline and emmergence of Holly Cherifs believed to protect cities from "assabian" countrymen.
Mullay Ismael tyranic reign did nothing to recover spanish presides but was kept busy to fight heavilly taxed rebelling tribes using black army of Emasculated soldiers (they never left any descent).

Ait Atta defeated Mulay Ismael army in Iger n Ugllid at Saghro mountains. They captured Mulay Ismael whose life has been spared by a man called Ali n Ait S3id who interjected for him. When he was brought to his tent, his mother screamed at him saying: Every body strived to loot ennemy (Ghanima) and you brought me Sma3el Uhddu, shame on you!!! Then he was allowed to leave the mountains and regain back Meknes on a condition of walking in bare feet. The story is still alive in Ait Atta mountains and the battle field is still called Iger N Ugllid
